Initial Assessment

From ten feet away the jeep looks great, aside from the broken tail light I found issues in many of the common problem areas.

Someone put a weird steering column/steering wheel in the cj, Im not sure what year its from but Ill probably replace it with a tilt column down the road.

The tub floor and floor pans have seen better days. They will be cut out and new metal welded in.

There were three or four bad body mounts, and of those this was actually one of the better ones.

And shame on me for not seeing this when I was buying the jeep but the front driverside frame has a crack on the inside behind these brake lines. Ive started to clean around the crack and plan on trying to close it up, weld it closed, and weld a plate over it. Hopefully that should hold it.

And under the hood was much more of a positive than an issue. A 304 V8 that seems to run pretty well and doesnt smoke. Intial plans are to replace valve cover and intake/exhaust gaskets to seal up some leaks and get a good look at the valve train.

Project 1978 CJ5

1978 CJ5 304 V8 3spd

Picked up this project, has a ton of issues. Im going to try and take care of a few things this month so I can drive it this summer and then spend the winter doing some resto work. Im starting with replacing the floor pans, going through the top end of the motor, and replacing some body mounts and bushings.
